The story of the Justice of the Peace (some versions say female registrar) refusing to believe Diane and Peter were old enough to get married is part of the celebrity magazine lore about Peter's first marriage. It seems rather odd that a celebrity photographer was there to photo the whole mix-up.
Although the caption to the second picture above states that Peter and Diane wed on October 11 (1958), they actually eloped in September when Warners scheduled Peter for a Lawman publicity tour which pre-empted their big wedding scheduled for October 11. Lawman debuted on October 5, 1958. Our guess is that Warners was not thrilled that the studio's most promising young western heart throb was losing his single status so soon.
